Cage, Presley to End Three-Month Marriage

LOS ANGELES (Reuters) - Oscar-winning actor Nicolas Cage has filed for divorce from second wife, Lisa Marie Presley, after just three months marriage in a short-lived union even by Hollywood standards.

{snip}

Cage declined to comment on the reasons for the divorce. "I did not talk about the marriage and I am not going to talk about the divorce," he said in a brief statement.

Presley said; "I'm sad about this but we shouldn't have been married in the first place. It was a big mistake," she said in a statement.

Heck, until today I didn't know they were married.
Meowcat
Well it was only 3 months so not surprising ejg25.

Thanks for starting this up Beej.

Well, they certainly had things in common - weird marriages. Wasn't there all that thing with him suddenly announcing that he and Patricia Arquette had actually been split up for years but carried on appearing together? And then she was married to tot-dangling Michael Jackson ... I maintain Cage only did it because of his Elvis obsession and considering that Jacko has that 'Elvis is the King of Rock, I'm the King of Pop' thing, that's kinda sad for her. So I think for her next marriage, she should get with someone who isn't interested in Elvis at all. First name that comes to mind ... Chuck D. "Elvis was a hero to most, but he never meant shit to me."
mjforty
Yeah, the whole Nicholas Cage/Lisa Marie Presley thing was doomed from the start. I mean, they had broken up for months and then reunited and got married within a matter of weeks. Plus, Nicholas Cage proposed to Patricia Arquette the day he met her and he was serious. She blew him off because she was dating someone else but when that ended she called him up and said something along the lines of "Is your proposal of marriage still open?"

I can't believe I have this nonsense cluttering my brain. Must cancel subscription to People now!
ejg25
I wish Nicholas Cage hadn't divorced Patricia Arquette, because now she's married to someone I would so love to be able to be interested in. Ah, well.

Michael Jackson. Is it possible that during any of his surgeries, he suffered brain damage? The whole changing of appearance thing is bizarre (I don't think I've spelled that correctly), but the baby-dangling performance last week was criminal - to the extent where any other parent who deliberately dangled an infant over a balcony several storeys up would be had up on charges of child endangerment. I don't have a problem with him changing his face - the net effect of that is that he looks like an idiot on many levels. The allegations of child molestation some years back always concerned me, but we don't know enough about that to make a judgment. The baby-dangling incident is a whole other can o' beans.

Ben and J-Lo? I'm okay with that. No, actually, I could care less.

Y'know what amazes me: in the last five years or so, a huge number of the formerly successful Hollywood marriages have broken down very publicly: obviously there was Tom and Nicole, and Dennis and Meg....but there was also Alec Baldwin and Kim Bassinger, Harrison Ford and his wife.....
Nalian
Michael Jackson's poor damn face.
Piranha
Oh my Lord, that's sad.

Piranha: The California authorities are investigating Michael Jackson. The news item here was that they were looking into who the mother was and seeing if she had any desire to fight for custody. I think its highly unlikely that the mother will fight for custody since she probably signed away parental rights for a big chunk of change, a la Debbie Rowe.

I have to admit to feeling really concerned about his children. Besides the baby dangling incident (which shows that the man obviously has no idea how to hold a child), the next day he took his two oldest out to the zoo and forced them to wear red veils over their faces so they could't be photographed. He is worried that they will be kidnapped. I think someone should kidnap those kids and save them from their father. He has also said he is planning on home schooling the children so it is possible that these children will grow to adulthood without ever having any exposure to the outside world (that is, exposure that isn't hampered by a fucking red veil).

I don't know about brain damage. I think it's a combination of body dysmorphication and the Howard Hughes-syndrome of surrounding yourself with people who go along with every hare-brained scheme you come up with instead of saying "Dude, that's just stoopid."
Pandrea
Well, yeah, he clearly doesn't have any notion of how to hold a wriggling baby but doesn't he have, like, six nannies on staff? I don't suppose he does much nappy changing. Of course, the nannies shouldn't let him near it if that's what he's going to do, but that doesn't worry me so much as the abuse allegation, because it was stupidity, not malice. The veils and the huge protection thing: well, I dunno. It's true that any children of his could never have a normal life; he can hardly send them to local schools. To be honest, I think anyone in such a weird position just shouldn't have children and inflict his lifestyle on them.
Meowcat
Has anyone else seen the photo of what he would look like if he hadn't had the surgery?

It was amazing - normal and even good looking. I'll see if I can find a link.

Have you got Andrea supplying the next dose? Not that I can talk - Tuesday isn't really Tuesday unless I have my new copy. I'm such a Gossip fiend.

I really do feel sorry for Jackson's kids. Although I hadn't realised that there was a third until now. And 'Prince Michael II'? The kid's got the same name as his brother. That's just a trifle bizarre.
BJC
Edited cause Pan explained it.
mjforty
Pandrea, I didn't mean to imply that Michael Jackson not knowing how to hold his son was a clear sign of abuse. I just thought it was interesting given all the press we have from his PR people about what a wonderful parent he is.

I disagree that his children couldn't attend school like other children. L.A. schools are full of celebrity children. I think it would do them a world of good. I also think that that type of isolation is a form of child abuse and should be looked into. Your children can't go outside unless you put a red veil on their head. How about just letting the children go to the zoo with their nannies. Then the press wouldn't be falling all over themselves trying to photograph them because they wouldn't know they were Michael Jackson's kids.

You're right, mj. He is denying his children any shot they might have at normality, by denying them contact with 'normal' children in a normal world, and secondly, by locking them up, either behind the gates at Never-neverland or behind the insanity of surgical masks and veils.

From a psych perspective, it looks to me as though we're dealing with someone who is quite genuinely unfit to be a parent. His judgment is way off. It's tragic, but to continue on in this way and allow those children to be irreparably damaged is infinitely worse.

I feel so sad for the gorgeous little boy who was Michael Jackson. I've already posted on this: in relation to the plastic surgery, I believe he's mentally unwell. Gone postal. Cracked a nutty. It's self-mutilation, and is a sign of a massively distorted self image. He has huge psychological problems, and the concept of that being okay because he's an eccentric superstar does not apply when he is a parent with sole custody of three young children.
ejg25
QUOTE

Could have been worse. He could have named the baby George Forman.

I didn't think the baby dangling was a problem or something normal parents wouldn't do. I've seen plenty of fathers toss their kids up in the air and catch them, and I remember that when we all went to visit the Griffith Observatory during the last Nanapalooza, there was a couple who had their toddler sitting on the edge of the ledge out over the city, secured only by an arm around his waist. I think it's all just a matter of personal vertigo tolerance. I think he just held the baby on the outside of the ledge instead of the inside because he thought the crowd wouldn't be able to see it otherwise.

The veil thing, on the other hand, is actionable.

To answer Pandrea's question, Arquette is married to Thomas Jane, a really winning individual who pops up here and there... most notably as Mickey Mantle in Billy Crystal's movie 61*. I believe the two of them either just had a baby or are going to.

Ben Affleck and Jennifer Lopez... I do try to reserve judgement, because I don't really know anything about these people and what their interactions together may be. Were I not reserving judgement, I'd deliver him the lecture, "We're not mad; we're just disappointed."
kmm56
RE Michael Jackson, I just recently figured out what his goal is with his plastic surgery.

He wants to look like Peter Pan.

I realized this when I saw one of the ads for the new Peter Pan animated movie go by. The similarity really is striking - and hey, Jackson lives in a place called Neverland...
Pandrea
To clarify, mj, I meant the earlier abuse allegation with that boy Jordy was the one that worried me far more. I hate to think of him getting away with stuff like that because of who he is. And I take the point that other famous people send their kids to school - I guess Madonna's daughter goes to school somewhere? - although they must have mega protection from the press and kidnappers. Everyone's so fascinated by Jacko that it would be tough for them, but I suppose do-able. I do think he's mentally disturbed and it's not even funny to joke about him being white or whatever anymore. The man's ill. But it's confused because for years he definitely exaggerated his eccentricities for publicity - eg, the whole thing about him sleeping in an oxygen tent? His people released that to the press and he posed for pictures. Someone's lost control of how he's presented and it's sad to think that there's no one who cares enough about him who'll get him help.

Beej, I sent you something else recently and stuck the current issue in, that's what I meant. Hopefully it'll turn up soon.

Apparently all Paul McCartney's kids went to their local comprehensive.

I agree with you, Pandrea, that the previous charges of sexual misconduct with minors is something to be concerned about. One of the articles I read said that the California authorities keep a close eye on Jackson's household because of those incidents. However, this is a state agency that is severely understaffed and underfunded so I wonder how well a job they can do.

As for Jennifer Lopez and Ben Affleck, really, other than wondering how often Jennifer Lopez will try and pull off the "no, really, this is the one. I know I said that last time, but I didn't know what true love was because I hadn't met [insert new male companion's name here] yet." She really is giving Julia Roberts a run for her money, isn't she? At least Julia has a tendency to call things off before she actually walks down the aisle.

Actually there is no earthly reason why Jacko's kids couldn't go to the local school. I mean, it's not like they *look* like him, and given the recent history with red veils, we don't know what they look like either.

Jackson on crutches after spider bite

SANTA MARIA, California (Reuters) - Superstar Michael Jackson has turned up on crutches in a California courtroom after a close encounter with a spider.

Jackson, whose bizarre appearance and baby-dangling antics have made headlines around the world for the past three weeks, was resuming testimony in a $21 million (13.4 million pound) lawsuit over cancelled millennium concerts.

But it was the self-styled King of Pop himself, dressed up in a white satin vest and tie, who again provided most of the drama.

Explaining the crutches and the white athletic sock he was wearing on one foot, Jackson told reporters; "It is a spider bite. It is real bad. If I showed it to you, you'd be shocked. It hurts very much right now as I speak."

Jackson, who keeps tarantulas at his Neverland Valley ranch near the central California town of Santa Maria where the suit is being heard, said his foot had swollen up after being bitten by a common spider during a fumigation of his home. The suspect was not one of his pet tarantulas.

Jackson, 44, wearing pink lipstick and rouged cheeks, later got playful with the courtroom photographer whose close-up pictures of the singer last month shocked fans and prompted a media frenzy about the effects of plastic surgery on his nose.

During a lull in testimony, he pulled goofy faces at the photographer and used his fingers to make horns above his head.

Just when you think Michael jackson can't get weirder he does.

He does get weirder. It's actually kind of sad. I feel so sorry for his children. Imagine having 2 named the same. Particularly, that name. It's the height of egocentricity. Blech.

As to Dogma. I loved it too. I thought it was excellent. I also loved Ben'n'Matt playing off each other. They have excellent chemistry.

For a man with that much money surely he can afford a decent PR company and lawyers who will a) deal with such situations and b) tell him what to say or tell him to shut up and speak for him.
Piranha
Well, he could probably afford them, but would he listen? The hallmark of real mental dissociation is not being able to recognise logic, having difficulty distinguishing right from wrong, and refusing to listen. He seems to have all three. In my very first tutorial as a communications student I was taught that it's very very difficult - if not ethically wrong - to make a bad client look good. I wouldn't want to be Jacko's publicist.
BJC
Oh this is funny, again its Michael and that court case......

QUOTE
He often seemed to be withholding a smile as he repeatedly responded to questions from a frustrated attorney for concert promoter Marcel Avram with the words "I don't recall."

"That's administrative work. That's not what I do. I'm the entertainer," Jackson said of the details involved in planning concerts.

When attorney Louis R. "Skip" Miller asked if Jackson suffered from memory problems, he replied: "Not that I can recall."

Jacko's Custody Fight Depends on Lisa-Marie

Troubled pop star Michael Jackson is trying to reunite with ex-wife Lisa Marie Presley in order to retain custody of his three children. The Invincible star reportedly wants to remarry the star, who split her husband of three months, actor Nicolas Cage, in December. Jackson, who ended his two year marriage to Presley in January 1998, apparently believes he has a better chance of evading an investigation into his suitably as a father - prompted by his dangling of baby Prince Michael II over the balcony of a German hotel last month - if he is in a stable relationship.

You have got to be kidding me.
Piranha
No sane person would grant Michael Jackson custody of anything, surely! Even if only 10% of the rumours were true, it'd be too weird. I would not want children to grow up in that environment: the mere fact that he named his two sons the same thing is evidence that he has no idea how to create a healthy life for children.

And yet no one has cracked down on George Forman. Maybe they're just blinded by the glory of his grill.
