It's more than the worst song ever, but the new Madonna album, "American Life," is really awful. I wouldn't call myself a die-hard Madonna fan, because I dislike a whole lot of her film work and don't think she's the best writer or singer, but I've consistently enjoyed her music and have quite a lot of it.
She seems to go through a lot of self-revelation here, but that's not what makes for good pop music, unless you're Creed. The music is in the same vein as the last album, but seems to be as if it's comprised of reject songs from that album. The best song is "Die Another Day," which took some getting used to the first time around. Perhaps it will grow on me. I hope it does.
If anyone feels compelled to listen to it, but is reluctant to spend the money (with good reason), let me know.

I wouldn't mind a listen through, if its not a problem. :)

The rap bit from the single is pretty bad, the hotties/Pilates/lattes bit.

I kind of like it - not enough to spend money on it but enough not to change the radio station/turn the radio off when it comes on.

I agree. I found it kind of catchy, and was bopping along to it.

Boliver--I agree with you. I was watching MTV while she was performing the majority of her songs and I was surprised at how mediocre a lot of the songs were. Personally, I felt like she had these sentiments which were interesting and should be explored but was not enough of an artist or craftsman to articulate them properly. It could have used a more sophisticated lyricist. But I've always felt that Madonna was more of an entertainer than an artist. I'm not knocking her chosen career path but I think she just bit off more than she could chew this time around.

Madonna has a good voice and good musicianship, but I've never thought she was all that bright. It's an oft-repeated complaint of mine: Remember back in the early 1980s, when she and Cyndi Lauper were on the same footing and nearly the same person? Well, permanent fame alighted on the wrong shoulders. Lauper's music was the clever and deep stuff... even though her voice is stranger.

See, for me it was always the exact opposite. I never thought she had a great voice or was very talented, but I think she's the smartest woman in the music business and is a genius at marketing. I always thought her greatest asset was her ability to target her strengths and find songs and styles that played to them.

Dear God. I switched on VH1, and they've got 'Worst Videos'
I've just seen the 'Snooker Loopy' song with Steve Davis et al, but it's beaten by the 'No Way, No way' song (partly to the tune of the mahna mahna song), by Vanilla in 1997.
*shudder*
No 5 is 'Save your love' with Renee and Renata. I want to turn over, but I'm mesmirised and wonder what they're going to find to top this. Renee & Renata aren't quite as bad as the song before, though in my opinion.
The next song, I don't even now, 'Bobby Conn' and 'Get ahead'. It's terrible!
No2 - Take that, 'Do what you like' from 1991. Now I feel old.
No1 - Cliff Richard's 'Wired for Sound'. Heeee.

WHAAAT? I quite like Wired For Sound! It's not even the worst Cliff record - that would be Millennium Prayer (overseas folk, this was the Lord's Prayer sung to the tune of Auld Lang Syne with a children's chorus, Number One at Christmas 1999). I like small speakers ... I like tall speakers ...
I'm not really a Bobby Conn fan, but I know people who are. He's kind of an acquired taste.
Can't disagree with Snooker Loopy or No Way No Way, though.

Well. Just. Yuck. Although I must say that I think this song has sufferred even more when paired in memory with That Video Clip. Urgh.

I grew up listening to Cliff Richard - he was one of Mum's faves when I was a kid (she listens more to things like Andrea Bocelli now).
I didn't say I agreed that Wired for Sound was the worst. I would argue that was something like Mr Blobby. It has dated somewhat though - the rollerskates, leg warmers and lycra is pure 80's.

I must admit I can't remember the video. If it really is judged on the visuals, I'm putting in a bid for Addicted To Love or I Should Be So Lucky, obnoxious and cheapo videos respectively.

Beleive me, the 'No Way, No Way' had both those songs beat on those critera.
Mind you, it's VH1, so it's always slightly odd - the one-hit wonders were debateable as well.

The video for Let's Get Physical is pretty crap too.
